When a court case centers around facts that are relevant to a particular specialized field, one of the parties may call in an expert witness to give testimony. This person must have experience in or knowledge of a content area that the average person could not reasonably be expected to be familiar with. By appearing before the court and giving his or her opinion on a particular piece of evidence or information about a case, the expert witness helps the jurors or judge to understand how that information applies to the case.
The expert witness also prepares a formal report with his or her findings. Both sides of the case will receive the report, and each expert witness will receive a copy of any reports from the opposing side. Ultimately, the expert witness’s responsibility is to provide the court with truthful and unbiased information – even if the truth contradicts or goes against the interests of the party that called in the witness.
